Thibaut Courtois set to extend his contract with Real

In the corridors of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the spotlights are focused on Real's dressing room where, according to the daily NLBeeld, Thibaut Courtois is said to be about to extend his contract. The verbal agreement, confirmed by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, would provide an additional year in the Spanish capital.

Details of the new contract

Courtois' current contract expires on June 30 next year, but both parties have agreed on an extension until the end of the 2027‑2028 season. It is therefore a one‑year extension, in line with Real's “tacit rule” that players over thirty renew annually. This practice was reiterated by the Spanish press.

At thirty‑four years old, Courtois joined Real in 2018, when he signed at the White House. He is thus set to play his tenth season between the posts of the Madrid club. Since his arrival, he has made 342 appearances with the Merengues and has won two Champions Leagues, a Club World Cup, an Intercontinental Cup, two European Super Cups, three La Ligas, a Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Belgian goalkeeper has reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid, the deal to be formalised quickly. The Italian journalist, a mercato specialist, highlighted that Courtois is considered a key player for Real. The text even mentions an invitation to add the subject to Google favorites, underscoring the media interest surrounding the operation.

This decision illustrates Real's policy of securing veteran players year after year, as the tacit rule cited reminds. Supporters are now awaiting the official formalisation of the contract, announced as imminent by the same journalist.
