Tension erupts as Rayo fans force LaLiga match halt at Vallecas
At the Estádio de Vallecas on Saturday, the eighth‑round LaLiga clash between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao descended into chaos when, thirteen minutes in, supporters hurled paper planes and rubber balls onto the pitch, prompting a ten‑minute suspension while police and officials scrambled to restore order.
Cleaning staff clear the pitch
The incident forced the referee José María Sánchez Martínez to halt play at the 13‑minute mark. The game was paused for roughly ten minutes while stadium cleaners removed the scattered paper and other debris. Rayo players even helped collect the litter before the referee signalled the restart.
Fans launch second wave of objects
The brief continuation lasted only moments before supporters resumed their protest, this time hurling sandwiches and even chairs onto the grass. Local media reported the chaotic scene as the public‑address system warned of safety risks and pleaded for cooperation, to no avail.
La Liga's decision leaves Rayo and Athletic without a Sunday replay
Referee Sánchez Martínez then summoned the captains, coaches and police officials to the centre circle for a final discussion. The parties agreed that the match could not safely continue, and the officials called an end to the game, which finished goalless.
The supporters’ group Agrupación de Peñas del Rayo Vallecano released an official statement describing the action as “legitimate and democratic”, “necessary and peaceful”, and a “consequence of three decades in which the health of 15 000 fans was put at risk”. Their note underscored the long‑standing grievances behind the demonstration.
