Ten‑deal test sees Roma’s €25m gamble on Mora defy £20m myth

Roma have turned to Porto’s teenage playmaker Rodrigo Mora to plug a creative void after a turbulent season, and the Giallorossi’s €25m investment could prove a rare bargain in a market where fees above £20m rarely are. Ten such deals are being examined this summer.

Mora’s rise and price tag

The 18‑year‑old was thrust into the spotlight when he starred for Porto’s B‑team at 15, catching the eye of Europe’s elite clubs. Porto had set a €70m (£59.5m) release clause for the summer of 2025, but it remained unmet.

His fortunes changed when new head coach Francesco Farioli arrived and the teenager fell out of favour, limiting his first‑team opportunities.

Roma’s deal and early impact

Roma seized the moment, presenting an offer of €25m (£21.4m) together with a 50 % sell‑on clause that can be bought out. The Giallorossi view the package as a bargain compared with the usual £20m threshold.

"He played a big part in my decision to come here because he likes players with my qualities, and I’m a fan of the way he wants his teams to play," Mora said. "The prospect of working with Gian Piero Gasperini was decisive."

Mora’s early signs are promising; he opened his Roma account with a goal against Lecce as the Giallorossi launched a flying start in Serie A.
