Telefónica's five‑year pact fuels Espai Barça upgrades at Barcelona

Barcelona have secured a five‑year partnership with Spanish telecom giant Telefónica, giving the Espai Barça redevelopment a technology backer and a branded hospitality suite as the club prepares the Spotify Camp Nou for the Champions League round‑of‑16 second leg against Newcastle United.

Deal details and ceremony

Telefónica, S.A., signed the agreement on 18 March, committing to a five‑year term as official partner of the Espai Barça redevelopment. A Getty Images photograph captured the stadium’s exterior as work continued during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg. Club president Joan Laporta and Telefónica España chairman Borja Ochoa attended the signing ceremony, confirming the partnership.

“Telefónica will provide a range of connectivity services at Spotify Camp Nou,” the club statement read, underlining the telecom’s role in modernising the stadium’s digital infrastructure during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg.

Laporta added, “This agreement with Telefónica brings to Espai Barça a leading technology and telecommunications company that understands the scale and ambition of the project. It will help us deliver an increasingly connected and innovative Spotify Camp Nou for our members and fans.”

The five‑year deal also grants Telefónica a private box and a lounge named after the company inside the stadium, giving the sponsor a visible presence on match days.

Espai Barça project scope

The Espai Barça masterplan already delivered the Estadi Johan Cruyff, now completed, and envisions a new indoor arena and a public plaza. Refurbishments to the iconic Camp Nou form the bulk of the ongoing works, coinciding with the Champions League tie.

Borja Ochoa said, “Telefónica is reaffirming its institutional role as a driving force in the Spanish economy, its support for culture and sport, and its commitment to Catalonia and the city of Barcelona.”

Telefónica highlighted that it invested 121 million euros in Catalonia last year and now employs more than 1,000 staff in the region, reinforcing its economic footprint alongside the football partnership.
