Tebas warns: overloaded schedule threatens players' health
The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, denounced during a FIFPRO summit in London that the increasingly packed calendar is creating a breaking point for players, calling for decisive action from FIFA and UEFA.
The causes of overload
Tebas identified among the main causes the new Club World Cup and the recent 48‑team World Cup held in North America, events that have drastically increased the workload for players.
“Some players are still able to cope, more or less, but eventually it reaches an inevitable breaking point,” Tebas said, adding that if the course is not reversed the situation will worsen dramatically because it is unsustainable.
The president also emphasized that football authorities must go beyond merely consulting the stakeholders, as, in his view, this approach does not produce concrete results.
According to Tebas, instead of reducing the load on players, current decisions are increasing it, putting the health of football itself at risk.
