Switzerland clinches knockout berth, ending Algeria's World Cup dream

🇨🇭
Switzerland secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 after a 2-0 victory over Algeria. The win came just hours after Portugal beat Croatia in their qualifier. The Swiss took the initiative early, with Breel Embolo breaking the deadlock in the tenth minute after a pass from Johan Manzambi. The goal gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead at the break. In the second half, Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage in the 46th minute, capitalising on a loose ball from Rafik Belghali, a former KV Mechelen defender. Algeria pressed for an equaliser, with Riyad Mahrez receiving a cross that Denis Zakaria blocked at the last moment. A potential penalty for Switzerland was reviewed when Manuel Akanji appeared to be fouled in a corner, but VAR did not intervene. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel remained untroubled throughout the match. Switzerland managed the two‑goal lead with sustained possession, while Algeria struggled to create clear chances. Fabian Rieder missed a clear opportunity that could have made it 3-0. The opponent for Switzerland in the round of 16 will be revealed after the Colombia‑Ghana match, which kicks off at 3:30. That fixture will determine who the Swiss face in the next stage.
