Swiss U21 lose to France as Iceland takes the playoff spot
The Swiss U21 national team had no chance and received no scoring support when they lost 1-7 to France in Orléans, missing out on the final tournament; already after 15 minutes it was 0-2, and Iceland's win over the Faroe Islands pushed Switzerland out of second place and the Playoffs.
French dominance in Orléans
After only fifteen minutes Switzerland were already trailing 0-2, both goals coming from the left side. The early lead left the Swiss with little room for counter‑attacks.
Mathys Tel scored the first goal in the tenth minute, and Noé Lebreton added another in the fourteenth minute. Liam Chipperfield narrowly missed the chance to turn the game in the twenty‑seventh minute.
France were more efficient before the break and took advantage of a Swiss defensive error to go 3-0 before halftime. Alessio Besio missed a free kick for 1-3, while Dehmaine Tabibou increased the score to 4-0. Tel netted his third goal, Steve Ngoura scored after coming on, and Kevin Danois sealed it in stoppage time; Chipperfield still scored the consolation goal for Switzerland.
Icelandic comeback secures Playoffs
In the parallel match Iceland put the Faroe Islands behind 2-0 after seventeen minutes, causing Switzerland to slip to third place in the virtual table.
Switzerland's only hopes for the Playoffs lay in the two goals against the Faroe Islands, but Iceland held on to its lead and therefore takes the Playoff spot, while Switzerland misses the U21 European Championship 2027 in Albania and Serbia.
Coach Alex Frei could have defended the second place with three points against France, but the crushing result sealed the elimination and shows how far the national team was from an upset victory.
