Swiss U21 avenge November loss with dominant win over Luxembourg
Switzerland's under‑21 national team secured a 5‑0 victory over Luxembourg in their Euro qualification match at home, delivering a decisive revenge for the 1‑2 defeat suffered in November. Liam Chipperfield and Labinot Bajrami each recorded a Doppelpack, while Alessandro Vogt opened the scoring in the 34th minute.
Early dominance and double‑goal heroes
From the first minute the Swiss side controlled the game, creating early chances that soon turned into goals. Chipperfield struck from distance to make it 1‑0, then converted a penalty two minutes later to complete his Doppelpack and put the hosts 2‑0 ahead.
Vogt added a third before half‑time, heading in a cross in the 34th minute to give the team a comfortable 3‑0 lead at the break.
Late surge and future stakes
In the second half, despite missing three players promoted to the senior squad – Winsley Boteli, Zachary Athekame and Sascha Britschgi – the U21s maintained pressure. A defensive error by Luxembourg allowed Bajrami to score the fourth goal in the 82nd minute, and he completed his own Doppelpack by pairing with Chipperfield in the 90th minute.
Swiss U21 lose to France as Iceland takes the playoff spot
Coach Alex Frei oversaw a discussion‑free win, noting the team’s control from the outset and the early offensive thrusts that set the tone.
The result restores the Swiss side’s confidence after the embarrassing November loss in Luxembourg, where they fell 1‑2 under former coach Sascha Stauch. That defeat had left the team with a perfect record of late goals conceded in the fourth group match.
Switzerland now sit on 17 points, level on points with France but with a game in hand, placing them second in Group C. A direct comparison will decide the group leader if points remain equal, as the first‑leg encounter with France ended 1‑1.
The U21s have two qualifiers left: an away game in Iceland on Tuesday and a decisive showdown in France on 6 October that could clinch the group title and direct qualification for Euro 2027 in Albania and Serbia.
