Swansea's left‑back crisis drives urgent loan hunt as pre‑season ends

Vitor Matos' Swansea City wrapped up pre‑season with a 1‑0 win over Leganes at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, but the victory underscored a glaring left‑back shortage as Josh Tymon remains the only regular in that position throughout the campaign.

Matos said a swift loan move for a left‑sided defender is imminent, expecting the deal to be finalised within the next few days.

The shortage is deepened by the midfield exits of Ethan Galbraith, who joined Stoke City, and loanee Malick Yalcouye, both of whom left during the summer.

In response, Swansea are also targeting a central midfielder and keeping a centre‑back on their radar to add balance across the spine of the team.

So far this summer the Championship side have bolstered the squad with attacking midfielders Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku and Moussa Yeo, as well as defender Stephen Welsh, expanding creative and defensive options.

"The market is still open, and when it's open there's always possibilities, and that's where we are at the moment," Matos explained. "Of course we need a little more depth in some parts of the pitch and we are working on that. That's the project."

Midfielder Goncalo Franco remains sidelined with a significant injury, and Swansea will face Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup next Saturday with limited midfield depth.

Recent departures have further thinned the roster, with Liam Cullen moving to Leicester City, centre‑back Ricardo Santos to Sheffield Wednesday and right‑back Sam Parker joining Wycombe Wanderers on loan; rumours linking the club with Valencia midfielder Andre Almeida were dismissed by Matos.

With the left‑back loan expected to be completed shortly and the transfer market still active, Swansea will continue hunting for the remaining pieces needed to deepen the squad before the opening Championship fixtures.
