Swansea City set new Motherwell Fir Park record with Just signing
Swansea City moved to fill a creative void in midfield after a season of limited goal‑producing options, targeting 26‑year‑old New Zealand international Elijah Just. The midfielder’s seven goals and eight assists in 43 matches for Motherwell convinced the club to break the Fir Park record with an undisclosed fee.
The transfer fee, while undisclosed, broke Motherwell’s Fir Park record, surpassing the amount received for Lennon Miller when he moved to Udinese last summer. This makes Just the most expensive player ever sold by the Scottish club.
Swansea City pursued Just because his seven‑goal, eight‑assist output across 43 matches shows both scoring ability and creativity. The club’s scouting department said his consistent threat in the final third marks a direct upgrade to their midfield options.
The 26‑year‑old New Zealand international has earned regular caps for his country. His season earned him a place in the PFA Scotland team of the season and a spot on the four‑man shortlist for the league’s player of the year award.
Motherwell’s board hailed the sale as another hugely successful moment for the club’s overall strategy. They noted it is the second record sale within 11 months and that the revenue will fund further investment in the squad.
The deal marks the fourth departure as Motherwell rebuilds under new boss Alfred Johansson. Johansson has already added five new recruits after the team finished fourth in the Premiership last term, following the earlier exit of manager Jens Berthel Askou.
Chief executive Brian Caldwell said Just’s 12 months at the club “will be remembered fondly by everyone”. He praised the midfielder as “a humble and genuine person who deserves every success”.
For Swansea City, the signing adds experience and a proven goal‑creating midfielder to their ranks. The club expects him to adapt quickly to the Championship and strengthen their midfield options.
For Motherwell, the record fee provides financial resources to continue rebuilding and to seek further additions in line with their strategic plan. The influx of funds supports the club’s ambition to return to the top of the Scottish Premiership and reinforces its reputation for developing talent.
