Surprise switch looms as Sandro Wagner eyes Hannover 96 job

Neuer Trainerjob Sandro Wagner looms as a Überraschungswechsel in the 2. Liga, with the former striker set to take charge of Hannover 96 on Tuesday and debut against VfL Bochum on Sunday. The move follows the imminent dismissal of Christian Titz, who faces the Aus after a poor start to the season.

Early Bundesliga dismissals echo

The early exits of Borussia Gladbach and Eugen Polanski highlighted how quickly clubs act when results falter, a pattern now repeating in the 2. Bundesliga.

Wagner's unconventional résumé

Als potenzielle Nachfolger wurden zuletzt Loic Fave, Mitch Kniat und Dimitrios Grammozis gehandelt, but the race now appears to be taken by Sandro Wagner. The 38‑year‑old former striker led SpVgg Unterhaching from 2021 to 2023, then served as assistant to national team manager Julian Nagelsmann before a brief spell at FC Augsburg.

Despite that short stint, Hannover 96’s sport director Jonas Boldt sees Wagner as a wildcard capable of revitalising the squad.

With the XXL international break looming, Wagner will have ample time to familiarise himself with the team and implement his ideas.

Christian Titz, 55, will therefore not return, as club patron Martin Kind has already consented to his Entlassung.

The appointment could signal a shift in the 2. Bundesliga’s coaching landscape, where swift changes are becoming the norm and clubs gamble on bold, unexpected choices.
