Supervolcano tremor: 4.7 quake rattles Naples and nearby islands

An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.7 struck the area around Naples at approximately 19:46, with the strongest shaking felt around the Phlegraean Fields, the city of Naples itself and the islands of Ischia and Procida, none reaching the strength of the primary quake. About an hour later, a 2.6‑magnitude aftershock was recorded.

Italian media reported that many people left their homes in fear and fled onto the streets.

The fire brigade received multiple reports of power outages and elevators that became stuck. They also noted the collapse of a building façade in Pozzuoli and fallen plaster in other locations.

Train services in Naples were temporarily halted to allow infrastructure checks. Trenitalia later announced on its website that both regional and high‑speed trains resumed operation.

The Phlegraean Fields, a region of high volcanic activity, has been experiencing numerous small and occasionally stronger quakes in recent weeks.

The area sits atop Europe’s largest active supervolcano. Supervolcanoes are characterised by massive magma chambers and can explode with far greater force than ordinary volcanoes.

The information comes from Reuters and was also covered by SRF 4 News on 1 August 2026.
