Supercomputer gives Bayern a second chance in Women's Champions League
The Opta supercomputer simulated the new 2026/27 season of the Women’s Champions League 10,000 times and found that FC Bayern Munich has roughly 17 percent, the second‑best chance for the title, while FC Barcelona, with over 40 percent, is considered the clear favorite. The season starts in September.
From a German perspective, only the previous season’s semifinalist and double winner FC Bayern Munich is represented in the new season. The other two German top clubs, VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, had to drop out dramatically in the qualifying playoffs.
Wolfsburg already failed in the first qualifying round match, while Frankfurt were eliminated in the second leg against an unknown opponent. Both teams missed the chance to compete in the group stage.
Simulation results and probabilities
The Opta supercomputer ran through the entire participant list 10,000 times. The calculations show that FC Barcelona, with over 40 percent, has the highest title probability, followed by FC Bayern Munich with roughly 17 percent.
Other teams that are clear favorites according to the simulation include Chelsea, Manchester City, record champion Olympique Lyon and FC Arsenal. These four clubs each lie in the single‑digit percent range, with the exact values not disclosed individually.
Other favorites and qualification hurdles
Behind the front‑runners follow Häcken with 1.2 percent, Real Madrid with 1 percent and Paris Saint‑Germain with 0.3 percent. However, all favorites must first survive the league phase and qualify for the top eight of the table to compete in the knockout stage.
Taking into account the probabilities of the other teams, Bayern’s most likely group‑stage table position is estimated at rank three. A third place would secure entry into the knockout round.
The new UWCL season kicks off on 22 September, and Bayern Munich will do everything to turn the second chance predicted by the supercomputer into a title.
