Sunderland target Milan midfielder Loftus-Cheek as Le Bris seeks boost

Sunderland have been given an opportunity to sign former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus‑Cheek, journalist Graeme Bailey reports, as the Black Cats look to add quality to their midfield. The 30‑year‑old’s contract at AC Milan expires next summer, opening a potential cheap winter move or a free transfer next year.

Midfield quality and Premier League experience

Loftus‑Cheek’s impressive form in the Premier League‑style role saw him feature in 32 matches for Milan last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist. The English talent is praised for his tackling, reading of danger and tidy passing, and he can operate as a box‑to‑box, defensive or number‑ten midfielder. Loftus’s experience in Serie A and Cheek’s familiarity with English football mean he would settle quickly at the Stadium of Light.

Regis Le Bris could expect Loftus‑Cheek to bring more depth and quality to Sunderland’s midfield, fighting for regular first‑team football at the Wearside club. His ability to win possession inside his own half and to contribute goals and assists fits the Black Cats’ need for a versatile central midfielder.

Contract situation and competition for his signature

With his contract at San Siro ending next summer, Sunderland have a chance to sign him on the cheap this winter or secure a free transfer at the end of the campaign. The club will rival Tottenham Hotspur, Coventry City, Newcastle United, Everton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Fulham in the race for this English talent next year.

Le Bris would be wise to go all out to get him on board this January or next summer, ensuring the Black Cats stay ahead of the competition. Securing Loftus‑Cheek could provide a significant midfield boost ahead of the next season.

Loftus‑Cheek was seen in action for AC Milan against SS Lazio on 29 November 2025 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, demonstrating the form that has attracted Sunderland’s interest.
