Stuttgart block January sale of Finn Jeltsch as United hunt defender
Stuttgart have signalled they will not entertain a January departure for 20‑year‑old centre‑half Finn Jeltsch, despite Manchester United (Utd)’s reported interest in the defender as a long‑term replacement for an ageing Red Devils star. The German club’s stance, reported from Italy, suggests they prefer to wait until the summer window to secure a substantial fee.
United's defensive gap
United’s recent summer activity saw INEOS bring in three forwards – Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba – for a combined £155m (€181m, $210m). Yet the club still lacks a new left‑back and a central defender, leaving a clear gap in the back line. MAN and UTD have both signalled the need for defensive reinforcements.
Stuttgart’s valuation and competition
The current first‑choice defensive quartet – Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw – have amassed a combined 964 appearances for the Red Devils, underscoring the stability United have enjoyed. Martinez’s injury record, however, suggests the role could become vacant next summer. Reports indicate United view Jeltsch as a long‑term heir to Martinez’s position.
Stuttgart have set the market value of Jeltsch at around €35 million (£20m, $41m) as of spring 2026, according to leading specialist platforms. The club have stated ON the matter that a January move is only possible on paper and would require a very substantial fee to change plans. Juventus, Bayern Munich and Arsenal are also reported to be chasing the defender, intensifying the competition.
Future options and obstacles
At 20, Jeltsch has already logged 54 appearances for Stuttgart and is praised for his comfort on the left side of a central partnership despite being predominantly right‑footed. His weaker‑foot metrics are considered strong, adding versatility to his defensive profile.
Stuttgart’s stance suggests they will hold the player until the summer window, when a massive fee could be secured. United, meanwhile, may need to explore alternatives such as Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven or the soon‑to‑return Matthijs De Ligt if a winter deal does not materialise.
