Strasbourg steadies before Vélodrome clash after Newcastle comeback

With just six days left before travelling to the Vélodrome to face OM in the Ligue 1 restart, Strasbourg capped their pre‑season on a positive note, drawing 1‑1 with Newcastle at St James’ Park before prevailing 3‑2 in the ensuing penalty shoot‑out.

William Osula gave the Magpies the lead at St James’ Park in the 38th minute, before Gessime Yassine restored parity for Strasbourg in the 69th minute after the break. The teams then settled the dead‑lock in a penalty shoot‑out, which Strasbourg won 3‑2.

The equaliser was a welcome moment for Gessime Yassine, whose future had been the subject of much discussion in recent months. Although the penalty win gave Strasbourg its first summer triumph, the performance did not erase all doubts ahead of the Ligue 1 restart.

Pre‑season difficulties for RCSA

Foot Mercato noted that Strasbourg’s preparation had been delicate, with the club failing to win any of its earlier summer fixtures and suffering four consecutive defeats. Un match after another had left the Alsaciens searching for rhythm. Le RCSA finally found the resources to reverse the trend at St James’ Park.

The side is now under the direction of Hugo Oliveira, who is still seeking stability after an off‑season that saw several senior players depart. Les players remaining must adapt quickly to the new hierarchy. James, the stadium’s namesake, witnessed the turnaround.

Looking ahead to the Vélodrome clash

Strasbourg will travel to the Vélodrome with a confidence that remains fragile but has been reinforced by the comeback against Newcastle. The encounter with OM marks the opening of the Ligue 1 campaign, and the Alsaciens hope to translate the late‑stage resilience into points. For the home side, the test serves as a reminder that even a side still under construction can pose a danger.

Diego Moreira and Samir El Mourabet have been linked with moves to Strasbourg, adding further uncertainty to the squad composition as the season approaches. Both players are attracting interest, which could influence the club’s strategy before the first league match.

The Vélodrome showdown will therefore be a true measure of whether the late‑stage revival can sustain Strasbourg through the early weeks of the Ligue 1 season.
