Steven Gerrard cautions against rushing JJ Gabriel’s exit from Man Utd
Manchester United face a potential loss of one of their brightest academy talents, 15‑year‑old JJ Gabriel, who has formally asked to cancel his registration and become a free agent. The club risk losing a player who scored a half‑time hat‑trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, and whose development is central to United’s long‑term plans.
A prodigy with a record debut
Gabriel, who turns 16 on 6 October, lit up his first appearance for the Red Devils’ under‑19 side by netting three goals in a single half against FC Sabah Under‑19s. The performance has led many to describe him as one of the best academy products United have ever produced. His rapid rise has already attracted attention beyond England.
Only days after that display, the Daily Telegraph reported that Gabriel has unexpectedly asked to quit United in search of a clearer pathway elsewhere. He has sent formal notice to cancel his registration with immediate effect, seeking free‑agent status after having been at the club since the age of 11.
Gerrard warns against a rushed exit
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard told that the situation “scares me” because young talents are often rushed or forced into moves. He highlighted the presence of English coach Michael Carrick and English assistant manager Steve Holland at United, saying they will protect Gabriel and only play him when ready.
Gerrard also used Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid as an example, questioning whether a top manager would thrust a teenager into the first team prematurely. He stressed that Manchester United’s history of developing players makes it the right environment for Gabriel’s health and career.
Former England midfielder Joe Cole echoed Gerrard’s sentiment, calling the situation “mind‑blowing” and noting that United’s reputation for nurturing talent should make Gabriel think twice about leaving.
European interest and registration hurdles
Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported that Chelsea are leading the race for Gabriel, while Barcelona and Real Madrid have already held talks. Liverpool are also among the clubs with “open offers”, but an immediate move to another English side would be difficult.
Gabriel’s academy registration runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, giving United the right to challenge his request. He will be eligible to explore a move to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona once he turns 16 on 6 October, after which the registration barrier eases.
The NEXT step for the teenager is to decide whether to wait for United’s clearance or to pursue interest from abroad once he reaches the eligible age. United’s coaches remain confident they can protect and eventually integrate him into senior football when the time is right.
