Steve McManaman backs Mbappe over Lamine Yamal ahead of Ballon d’Or
Real Madrid travel to Barcelona for La Liga’s first Clasico, with Jose Mourinho’s side hoping to halve the Catalan club’s lead at the top of the table. The match precedes the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday, where Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal are both in contention. Former Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman has already backed Mbappe for the award.
McManaman, who starred for Real Madrid and Liverpool, gave his view in an exclusive interview with 365Scores. He said he would choose Mbappe because the French striker can make the difference and score in the biggest matches, adding that his experience helps him handle pressure.
“I would choose Kylian Mbappe,” McManaman said when asked to pick between the two stars. “He is a player who can make the difference and score goals in the biggest matches, and he has enough experience to help him handle the pressure.”
“Lamine Yamal is a very talented player and has performed at a high level despite his young age, but if I have to choose between the two right now, I would vote for Mbappe,” he added.
Mbappe is a favourite for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with his record‑breaking World Cup campaign and impressive season statistics cited as evidence of his superiority. McManaman acknowledged Yamal’s rapid development but maintained that Mbappe’s overall impact makes him the stronger candidate.
McManaman predicts Real Madrid victory
Turning to Sunday’s Clasico, McManaman expects a tightly contested game decided by small details. He believes both sides have the ability to decide important games and hopes Real Madrid will emerge victorious.
Mourinho’s tactical concerns
Mourinho will aim for a win at the Camp Nou tomorrow, despite the suspension of Vinicius Jr., which he described as a significant blow. He warned that Mbappe’s abilities cannot simply replace what Vinicius offers in his position.
McManaman also voiced confidence that Real Madrid could win 3‑1, though he admitted the result will depend on how the teams perform. A victory away from home would be a huge statement and could halt Barcelona’s perfect league run.
