Sterling's dangerous driving admission fuels legal battle

Former England winger Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has admitted dangerous driving after crashing his £270,000 Lamborghini Urus into M3 barriers on the morning of 28 May, and also confessed to possessing nitrous oxide and refusing a specimen in a police report.

Details of the crash

Police were called to the M3 in Hampshire on 28 May before 9am after reports of a black Lamborghini swerving across three lanes near the Minley interchange. Footage later released showed the vehicle veering before it struck the southbound carriageway barriers.

The force confirmed it was a single‑vehicle collision, with no other cars involved and no injuries reported. The incident occurred southbound on the M3, close to the Minley interchange, and Hampshire Police said the crash caused significant disruption to traffic.

Legal charges and court appearance

Sterling faces three charges: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide – a Class C drug – and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Tuesday afternoon, dressed in black trousers, black shoes and a dark top.

At the hearing, he pleaded guilty to driving the Lamborghini dangerously on the M25, the M3, the A327 and Minley Road before the crash. The court will consider sentencing after the admissions.

Beyond the legal case, Sterling's football résumé includes 82 England caps, the last earned at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Earlier this year he made eight appearances for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, and he is currently without a club.

His senior career began at Liverpool, followed by moves to Manchester City, Chelsea and a season‑long loan at Arsenal. He signed for Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022, made 59 league appearances for the Blues, and spent the 2024‑25 season on loan at Arsenal before joining Feyenoord on a short‑term deal in February.

In the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Sterling was awarded an MBE for services to racial equality in sport. The accompanying Getty Images photograph shows him in a black outfit as he entered the courtroom.
