Stephen Warnock says Liverpool missed Zion Suzuki as Villa rebuilds

Ex-Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock told the Reds they have missed out on goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who has just joined Villa Park as the club undergoes a massive summer overhaul that has seen several key players depart, including the sale of Emi Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans.

Villa's summer exodus

Villa's summer exodus saw a raft of senior players leave. The club sold goalkeeper Emi Martinez, midfielder Morgan Rogers, striker Ollie Watkins, defender Ezri Konsa and midfielder Youri Tielemans, among others. Martinez and Rogers moved to Premier League rivals Chelsea, while Konsa joined Arsenal.

Warnock believes Martinez's departure was inevitable and that his replacement, Zion Suzuki, would have bolstered Liverpool's goalkeeping options. He told GOAL: “I actually think they’ve got a brilliant goalkeeper in Suzuki… I was at the World Cup and did his game against Brazil. I thought he was brilliant in that game.” He added that with Alisson heading towards free agency, Liverpool “missed one there, if I’m being completely honest.”

Warnock's missed target and long‑term view

Warnock also praised Villa’s new manager Unai Emery, saying the Spaniard is the right man to rebuild the club. “It’s a blessing in disguise,” he said, adding that the next two or three years should see Villa in a better position than the short term.

He noted that six members of the starting eleven from the Europa League final have already left, underscoring the scale of the transition. “Six players out of the starting team from the Europa League final have left the football club,” Warnock said.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy echoed the optimism, despite acknowledging the massive overhaul. He said: “Massively in transition, I mean 11 signings is a hell of a lot, and they’ve lost real quality… Six have gone, they’ve spent a lot of money bringing in 11 players, and there’s a lot of quality international players in there.” The summer window therefore introduced eleven new faces to the squad. He concluded he is not worried about Villa under Emery.

Both Warnock and Murphy stress that while the short‑term outlook appears challenging, the influx of new talent and Emery’s philosophy could stabilise Villa’s fortunes.

The comments leave Liverpool with a pointed reminder that a highly rated goalkeeper slipped away as the club reshapes its squad.
