Start GC propels them to provisional lead in Women Super League
At the Letzigrund stadium, a crowd of 1 500 fans watched Start GC burst into a dream start, leading 3‑0 after just 12 minutes and eventually beating FCZ Frauen 4‑1 to seize provisional top spot in the Women Super League in the eighth round.
Early onslaught and goal details
The Zurich Derby saw GC dominate from the first whistle. After a hard shot from Paige Bailey‑Gayle was saved, Kayla McKenna tapped in the rebound for the opening 1‑0. A swift pass from Bailey‑Gayle to Ella Ljustina produced the second goal, and Marta Cazalla converted a penalty to make it 3‑0.
In the 35th minute the Jamaican double‑front of GC combined again, with Qendresa Krasniqi threading a through‑ball to Bailey‑Gayle, who crossed to McKenna for her sixth season goal, sealing 4‑0. After the break the 30‑year‑old continued her generosity, finding the net in the 49th and 53rd minutes to complete a personal hat‑trick and push the score to 5‑0.
The FCZ team, the only unbeaten side before the match, were left reeling. Captain Naomi Mégroz called a crisis meeting on the pitch, while German coach Martina Voss‑Tecklenburg, who had only taken the job on Thursday, watched from the bench as interim coach Alessandro Mangiarratti led the side.
Goalkeeper Riana Gmür, despite an early concession, kept her composure and later denied further chances. Near the end, Janina Egli struck a beautiful shot from the edge of the box ten minutes before the final whistle, adding a touch of result cosmetics.
Aftermath and upcoming challenges
With the victory, GC overtook FCZ and now sit top of the table at least until Sunday, after which Servette Chênois could reclaim the lead with a win in St. Gallen. Nach the match, the victorious side celebrated while Sie regrouped.
