Standard lose Bates to Turkey with 90% of Europe Play-Off minutes
Standard Liège face a defensive reshuffle after David Bates confirmed his departure to Turkish side Amedspor. The Scottish defender, who made 27 official appearances since joining in summer 2024, leaves with 12 months remaining on his contract.
The move was announced two days ago, catching many by surprise. Bates joins Amedspor, a newly promoted side in the Turkish top flight, for a reported fee of €500,000. The transfer provides Standard with a modest financial return while closing the door on a potential contract extension.
Bates had established himself as a cornerstone in defence since returning from injury in January. The 29-year-old played nearly every minute in the Europe Play-Offs, featuring in 18 matches and logging 90% of available time. His reliability contrasted with a squad plagued by injuries and inconsistency.
His impact extended beyond mere presence: Bates scored in Standard’s 0-5 away win over Antwerp. The result highlighted his ability to deliver in high-pressure moments, a trait that endeared him to supporters at Sclessin.
Financial considerations also played a role. Bates earned a relatively high salary compared to teammates, and Standard opted to recoup a portion of their initial investment. The club will receive the same amount they paid Malines two years ago to sign him.
Dimitri Lavalée, Standard’s third summer signing, formed a defensive partnership with Bates. The pair started 21 matches together, but Lavalée is expected to take over Bates’s role in central defence. Standard will hope the French defender avoids the injury issues that have disrupted previous seasons.
Standard’s sporting director confirmed the club acted pre-emptively. With no extension on the horizon, Bates’s exit allowed the club to secure a small transfer fee before his contract expired. The decision reflects broader financial constraints at the club.
The loss of Bates comes as Standard aim to build on a turbulent season. His departure leaves a void in experience and minutes played, particularly in continental competition. The club now faces the challenge of replacing his consistency in defence.
