Standard and the Red Devils favor Roméo Lavia over Nicolas Raskin

Steven Defour, former player of the Red Devils and Standard, said that Roméo Lavia is the best choice for the number 6 position, even after Belgium's defeat to France. Lavia, a midfielder for Chelsea, took advantage of his first start against France to show his impact in the midfield.

Performance against France and prospects

During Monday's match, Lavia earned points for the Red Devils, although Belgium lost. Despite the defeat, his play was judged very strong, according to Defour, who points out that club performances directly influence national team selection.

Defour reminded that “In the national team, everything is often a matter of form and performance. If things aren't going well at your club, you can quickly find yourself on the bench with the Red Devils.” He added that Lavia is already showing consistency with Chelsea early in the season.

Competition for the number 6 position

The choice between Lavia and Nicolas Raskin remains open, but Defour believes Raskin “roams a little more” while Belgium needs a player more anchored in front of the defence. He notes that when Lavia wins the ball, even under pressure, he immediately drives it forward.

Mark van Bommel, designated captain, could however favour Youri Tielemans, who remains hard to dismiss. Defour nevertheless stated that, in his view, Lavia remains the number one for the number 6 role, with Raskin as number two, even after the expected return of Amadou Onana in 2027.

Belgium's next challenge will be against Turkey on Friday, in the third group match of the Nations League. Lavia will have another opportunity to strengthen his impression on the coach.
