Stade Rennais hope profit from FC Barcelona defender Mikayil Faye
Mikayil Faye, the 22‑year‑old Senegalese defender who joined Stade Rennais from FC Barcelona in 2024, is currently on loan at Nuremberg with an option to buy in the summer of 2027, a deal that could allow Rennes to recover part of its €10.3 million outlay.
Barcelona roots and Rennes investment
Stade Rennais secured Faye’s services for €10.3 million in August 2024, after the defender had been recruited by FC Barcelona from NK Kustosija. Barcelona retained a €25 million buy‑back clause and a 30 percent share of any future resale. The transfer marked Faye’s arrival in Bretagne, where he was expected to strengthen the club’s defence.
In his first season with Rennes, Faye featured in only eleven Ligue 1 matches. Before that, a loan spell at Cremonese in Serie A yielded eight appearances. The lack of minutes has prompted the club to seek regular football elsewhere.
For the 2024‑25 campaign, Faye moved to Nuremberg on a season‑long loan that includes an option to purchase in the summer of 2027. He has yet to make his debut for the German side. The success of the arrangement hinges on him gaining regular playing time.
Nuremberg warned that Faye would not be an immediate solution, citing his recent scarcity of minutes. Coach Miroslav Klose praised his training progress, saying, “Mikayil gives an increasingly positive impression and you can see his technical quality.” Klose added that the defender has been training with the squad for some time.
Financial stakes of the Nuremberg option
The exact price of the purchase option has not been disclosed, but sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou described it as falling within a realistic range for the club. Having invested over €10 million, Rennes hopes to recoup a portion of that sum, or possibly more, should Faye re‑establish his level in Germany. The club’s Mercato strategy therefore hinges on the outcome of the Nuremberg loan.
If Faye secures a regular role during the 2026‑27 season, the option could become an attractive financial proposition for Rennes. Club officials see the scenario as a chance to avoid a flop and potentially generate a “nice bill” from the deal. Rennes will monitor his progress closely as the summer 2027 deadline approaches.
