Stade Rennais hold off Premier League bid, eye future deal for Aït‑Boudlal
Stade Rennais have turned down a reported £35 million Premier League offer for 20‑year‑old centre‑back Abdelhamid Aït‑Boudlal, choosing instead to secure his future with a fresh contract while the club continues its proven talent‑selling model.
Premier League interest and rejected offer
Fulham led the chase, presenting several proposals that culminated in a bid valued at €35 million, bonuses included. The London club reportedly multiplied its approaches during the summer window, hoping to persuade Rennes’ hierarchy.
Rennes ultimately refused to release Aït‑Boudlal, a decision that unsettled the player and complicated the start of his season. Manager Franck Haise and sporting director Loïc Désiré publicly criticised his lack of concentration after the market closed.
Contract extension as a strategic move
Despite the setback, Rennes appear determined to retain the defender. a new agreement has been reached, extending Aït‑Boudlal’s contract beyond its original June 2028 expiry, although the exact length remains undisclosed.
The extension is presented as a positive signal, allowing Rennes to develop the player further and approach future transfer windows from a position of strength rather than urgency.
At 20, Aït‑Boudlal still has significant room for improvement. If he regains regular playing time under Haise, his market value could rise sharply, potentially attracting offers exceeding the initial €35 million figure.
Other English clubs, including Newcastle United, Brentford, Everton and Hull City, have also been linked to the defender, alongside interest from major European leagues. Rennes’ clear strategy is to nurture his development while keeping options open for a lucrative sale later.
In parallel, the club continues its broader project of renovating Roazhon Park and exploring a new stadium site at La Barre‑Thomas, underscoring a long‑term vision that balances on‑field success with sustainable growth.
