St Mirren's cup win puts Stevie Mallan in signing spotlight

St Mirren's 4-0 triumph over Cove Rangers on Saturday secured a perfect start in the Premier Sports Cup Group C, giving the club two wins from two and placing them in a strong position now to qualify from the group.

Midfielder Stevie Mallan, 30, featured as a trialist substitute in the Saturday win, providing fresh impetus on the pitch. His involvement added a new dynamic to St Mirren’s attacking play.

Manager Craig McLeish confirmed the trialist status, saying, "Right now, he's a trialist." He also noted that Mallan has been training with the squad for several weeks.

McLeish added that the club initially offered training facilities, but Mallan's performances have pushed him into the club's thoughts for a possible signing. The manager indicated the trial could soon turn into a contract.

Mallan began his professional career at St Mirren before moving to English side Barnsley and later returning to Scotland with Hibernian. He then spent time in Turkey with Yeni Malatyaspor, followed by a spell at Salford City in England, before joining St Johnstone. During the previous season, Mallan helped St Johnstone win promotion, a contribution highlighted by McLeish as a credit to the midfielder.

St Mirren will host East Kilbride and Dunfermline Athletic in their remaining Group C fixtures. McLeish indicated that a decision on Mallan could come sooner rather than later.
