Sporting’s new Brazilian keeper shines in Champions League debut
While Sporting celebrated a 2-0 win over Lens in France, the club also marked the arrival of former Palmeiras goalkeeper Kaique Pereira, who made his first appearance in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Brazilian kept a clean sheet, made six saves and left the pitch unbeaten, prompting immediate plaudits.
Transfer and debut details
Kaique Pereira joined Sporting from Palmeiras in August for a fee of R$ 24 million. The move made him the fourth youngest Brazilian goalkeeper ever to start a Champions League match, at 23 years old. His debut came in the group‑stage fixture against Lens, held in France.
In that match, Pereira recorded six saves and helped Sporting secure a 2-0 victory, ensuring the team remained unbeaten in the competition so far. His performance earned him commendation from Sporting’s head coach Rui Borges.
Coach’s assessment and future outlook
Rui Borges said Pereira “showed that he is here to help and to become another option for us”. He added that the youngster “will make mistakes, but that is part of the process” and stressed that Pereira possesses “enormous potential”.
Sporting set 51‑year Champions League away clean‑sheet record Arsenal never matched
The coach also highlighted that Pereira’s arrival fits the club’s ambition to progress in the Champions League and achieve season objectives. Pereira himself expressed happiness, stating he was “very pleased to play my first game with this shirt” and that starting the campaign with a win in the Champions League was “something every footballer dreams of”.
Before moving to Sporting, Pereira spent time on loan at Farense and Nacional, also from Palmeiras. He had previously featured in 77 youth matches for Palmeiras, winning eight titles, and was part of Brazil’s under‑20 side that won the South American championship in 2023.
His performance also placed him among a select group of Brazilian keepers who have featured in the competition, alongside Kauã Santos of Eintracht Frankfurt, Ederson of Benfica and Carlos Coronel of RB Salzburg.
