Sporting forces Zeno Debast to delay his return, two matches lost
Belgian defender Zeno Debast must again postpone his return to competition with Sporting, with coach Rui Borges confirming on Saturday that he will miss at least two matches after being absent since September 19 and that his physical condition remains uncertain.
Confirmed absence
Zeno Debast suffers from physical problems for several weeks, which has kept him away from the pitch since September 19. Previously, Rui Borges had hinted that the player was close to a return and could soon train with the group. This optimistic prospect disappeared during Saturday’s press conference.
Schedule impacted
The coach said Zeno will not be available for Sunday’s match against Académico de Viseu, nor for Tuesday’s meeting against Marítimo in the Portuguese League Cup. He described this absence as significant for the team. Thus, the Belgian defender will miss two consecutive fixtures.
The date of his return remains, for now, unknown. Rui Borges did not give a precise estimate, emphasizing that recovery will depend on the evolution of his physical problems. Sporting will therefore have to adjust its defensive setup in the meantime.
Stakes and adjustments
Rui Borges also indicated that, given the options available, he will field his best eleven against Académico. He added that there could be one or two changes in the team lineup. This flexibility aims to maintain solidity at home.
Sporting will also have to do without Rodrigo Zalazar in these two matches. The absence of the attacking midfielder further complicates the coach’s task, who must compensate both in defence and attack. These unavailabilities add to the club’s recent challenges.
The Portuguese club must revise its plans after the 2‑3 European defeat against LASK Linz. This loss has heightened the need to strengthen tactical coherence. The coach hopes the adjustments will allow a return to victory.
For Zeno Debast, patience therefore remains required. While he seemed ready to return a few days ago, he will have to extend his unavailability. The Belgian player hopes to regain his level as soon as his condition permits.
Supporters will be able to watch Sporting against Académico de Viseu live from 21 h 30 on 25 October. This broadcast offers fans the chance to observe the tactical adjustments announced by Rui Borges.
