"We tried more long balls and we were letting Famalicão enter in quick attack," he said, acknowledging the tactical misstep.

Borges highlighted that the first half was played with patience and ball retention, but the change in approach compromised their defensive shape. The lone goal came from a defensive lapse on the left flank, where an ill‑timed cut from Inácio resulted in the ball finding the net. "In the only chance Famalicão had, we were unlucky on Inácio's cut and the ball ended up in the net," the manager explained.

The coach refused to comment on the officiating, stressing that the decisive moment was more about a lack of competitive intensity than any refereeing error. "We lacked competitive attitude in the minute we didn't have our usual energy and intensity," he added, warning that such lapses are intolerable for a title‑challenging side.

Injury concerns also featured, with forward Zalazar sidelined after a two‑day illness, prompting Borges to keep him out of the starting XI. "Zalazar was ill the last two days, so we chose not to start him," the manager said.

Looking ahead, Borges expressed worry about the team's performance on the eve of a high‑stakes derby, insisting that improvement is essential. "Clearly it is a result we did not want for our path, so we have to improve and grow even more for the next game," he warned.

When asked about the potential inclusion of Ioannidis, Borges dismissed the idea, noting the plan was to maintain width and use two men in the box while Zalazar made runs from deep. Even after the equaliser, Sporting created three clear crossing opportunities that could have been better finished, underscoring the need for sharper execution.
