Sporting CP seize advantage while Lens dominate without reward

In a night that saw the Ligue UEFA clash at Bollaert‑Delelis, Sporting CP grabbed the win despite a spell of complete control by the home side, RC Lens. Luis Suarez opened the scoring and Issa Doumbia added a second, leaving Lens empty‑handed after a dominant display.

Sporting CP’s decisive moments

Issa Doumbia struck the second goal after receiving a through ball from Silas Andersen, extending Sporting’s lead. The Portuguese club celebrated the strike, with the players visibly happy after the 2nd goal. Luis Suarez had earlier put Sporting ahead in the 22nd minute, meeting an Irankunda cross and beating Risser to finish.

Lens’ possession and missed chances

From kickoff, the Sang et Or side possessed the ball, dictating play and creating numerous opportunities. Yannick Cahuzac’s men were relentless, yet their attacks lacked cutting edge. Florian Thauvin and his fellow forwards pushed forward but failed to combine effectively, despite generating the most chances.

Their inefficiency was highlighted by a poorly negotiated final pass and a brilliant move from Kaique Pereira that threatened the Sporting keeper, who held firm and kept his line unbreached. Lens continued to press after the break, maintaining pressure but never finding the finishing touch.

Ultimately, the home side’s dominance proved sterile, and the scoreline remained unchanged after Doumbia’s goal. Sporting CP became the first club to win both of its opening European matches this season, while Lens will look to recover against Club Brugge in the next round.

Sporting’s next challenge arrives on the third matchday against LASK, whereas Lens prepares for a clash with Club Brugge, hoping to translate possession into points.
