PEC Zwolle players' bus ambushed by angry fans after heavy defeat to FC Groningen

PEC Zwolle’s squad was met by a hostile crowd outside the club’s stadium on Tuesday evening, as dozens of supporters gathered around the team bus and shouted “Schaam je kapot” after a 4-0 loss to FC Groningen. Video footage released by local media showed the bus surrounded by chanting fans, prompting concerns over safety and fan behaviour.

The defeat, which came in the seventh round of the Eredivisie, left the club with just four points and entrenched them in 16th place. Head coach Henry van der Vegt described the defensive lapses as “very naïve” and expressed relief that the international break had finally arrived, hoping the pause would allow the squad to regroup.

Hostility towards the coaching staff was evident even in Groningen, where away supporters sang for the manager’s dismissal. The same chants echoed back at PEC’s home ground, intensifying the pressure on the club’s hierarchy.

While van der Vegt and the players chose not to engage with the demonstrators, club director Gerry Hamstra stepped forward to address the unrest. “We need the support of our fans now more than ever,” Hamstra said, urging calm and emphasizing that the current staff possesses the qualities to turn the season around.

Hamstra also outlined the club’s immediate plans, noting that there is roughly a month before the next fixture on 11 October. “We have a small window to work on a recovery, both on the pitch and in the stands,” he added, pledging to review security protocols and improve dialogue with supporter groups.
