Spanish football clubs unite in tribute to Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel

The football world mourns the sudden death of 30‑year‑old Jesús de Miguel, a forward for CD Tenerife, after a head clash in a Segunda División match left him in intensive care where he later succumbed, prompting Real Madrid and FC Barcelona to post heartfelt tributes, and even the French phrase “Les hommages” featured in the statements.

Condolences from Spain's giants

Real Madrid C.F., its president and board publicly expressed deep regret over the death of Jesús de Miguel, player of CD Tenerife.

The club said it wishes to convey its condolences and affection to his family, teammates, club and loved ones.

FC Barcelona also issued a statement saying it deeply regrets the tragic news and sends thoughts and support to his family, friends and close ones.

Wider football response

The Spanish striker died at the hospital in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from cardiac arrest and a malaise that followed a violent head collision with Equatorial Guinean goalkeeper Jesus Ovono during a Segunda División fixture against FC Andorra.

He was rushed to intensive care but his condition deteriorated, sending shock through Spanish football.

Marc Escolà, commenting on FC Andorra’s situation, said “We are fucked”.

CE Sabadell suspended training after learning of his death and cancelled all activities scheduled for Tuesday as a sign of respect.

The squad observed a minute of silence on the pitch and the planned training session was not held.

Press conferences for the coach and a club sponsor were also called off.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation announced the suspension of all Copa del Rey matches slated for today, while a decision on tomorrow’s 4 November first‑round tie between Sabadell and Utebo remains pending.

The original first‑round match had been due on 28 October but was postponed after a railway accident in the Urda area.

Sabadell posted on social media a message of condolence, sending a strong hug to the family and friends of CD Tenerife and wishing the player peace.
