Spain aims to cement its dominance at the World Cup against North Korea

Spain were crowned champions of the U-20 Women’s World Cup by beating North Korea in the final played in Łódź on September 29, prevailing in the penalty shoot‑out where goalkeeper Laia López of Real Madrid saved two attempts.

The Return to the Throne

Four years ago, the Spanish national team lifted its first world title in Costa Rica, and now has reclaimed the trophy it had lost to the Asian powerhouse. Until September 29, North Korea held the crown as the reigning champion.

The Penalty Shoot‑out

In the shoot‑out, Laia López turned into a heroine by stopping the two penalties that gave Spain the victory. The other Spanish takers converted, while the North Korean goalkeeper missed her attempts.

The team coached by David Aznar had completed a perfect tournament, winning all its matches and displaying tactical superiority. Aznar introduced two changes compared with the semifinal, maintaining ball control from the start.

The opening minutes saw chances for Cerrato and a reply from Pak that Laia cleared to a corner. The pressure remained balanced, with both sides looking to attack behind the centre‑backs.

Aznar’s Decisions in Extra Time

In extra time, Aznar replaced Pau and Rosalía with Julià and Marisa, seeking freshness in a period where fatigue dominated. Chances became scarce and the action was reduced to a few one‑on‑ones inside the box.

IT’S NO LONGER A DREAM, SPAIN ARE THE U-20 WORLD CHAMPIONS!

The triumph confirms a golden era for Spanish football, with a U‑20 generation that has shown its ability to overcome the indomitable Asian powerhouse.
