Southend bolster attack with Colclough signing amid legal backdrop
Southend United have moved to strengthen their attacking options by signing forward Ryan Colclough, a 31‑year‑old who helped Chesterfield win promotion to League Two in 2024 and was previously linked with manager Kieron Dyer at the Spireites, and also secured midfielder Tommy Backwell and winger Sahid Kamara after they impressed on trial.
Colclough, 31, received a suspended prison sentence for assault earlier this month. He was handed a 28‑month term, suspended for two years, after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm without intent at Derby Crown Court. The club released a Getty Images photograph of the player.
Colclough signed a one‑year deal with Southend United, which includes an option for a further year. The agreement gives the Shrimpers flexibility while adding his promotion‑winning experience to the squad.
The Shrimpers also completed the signings of midfielder Tommy Backwell, 23, and 22‑year‑old winger Sahid Kamara after successful trials at Roots Hall. Both players impressed during their trial periods and earned contracts.
Backwell secured a one‑year contract with an option for an additional year, having been released by Cheltenham at the end of last season. His addition provides depth in midfield for Southend.
Kamara agreed a two‑year deal with the option of a third year, following his departure from Braintree Town. The winger is expected to contribute pace and creativity on the flanks.
All three newcomers will join the Shrimpers at Roots Hall as the club prepares for the upcoming season, aiming to translate their trial performances into competitive impact. Their integration will be monitored by manager Kieron Dyer as Southend seeks to improve its league standing.
