Southampton manager avoids lengthy ban as FA hands suspended sanction
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert escaped a harsher sanction on Wednesday after the English Football Association (Inglesa FA) imposed a suspended punishment for his role in the ‘Spygate’ espionage case. The FA also levied a £28,000 fine on the 33‑year‑old German coach, who remains in charge in the Championship.
Despite the penalty, Eckert avoided a prolonged suspension and will continue to lead Southampton on the touchline. The suspended ban means he can still manage the club in the English second tier.
Southampton were eliminated from the playoff final for promotion and penalised with a four‑point deduction after admitting three breaches of English Football League regulations, including spying on semifinal opponents Middlesbrough and two other clubs.

The club issued a statement dated 7 October 2026, noting that Eckert attended an FA hearing at the start of the last FIFA international window and was cleared to manage Southampton against rivals Portsmouth the following Sunday.
The board described the resolution as the end of a lamentable period in the club’s history.
