Southampton legend warns Tonda Eckert Spygate ban would double‑whammy
Former Southampton captain Francis Benali has warned that a possible ban for head coach Tonda Eckert over the Spygate saga would deliver a “double whammy” to the club. Benali, who made 364 appearances between 1988 and 2003, said the ongoing FA investigation threatens to plunge the Saints’ 2026‑27 season into fresh turmoil.
The club was already punished by the EFL in May with ejection from the 2025‑26 Championship play‑offs and a four‑point deduction for 2026‑27. The FA has now charged Eckert with three breaches of rule E3.1 for misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026, a charge announced in July. No official decision has been released during the first international break, fuelling speculation about a six‑month ban.
Benali’s view on the sanctions
Benali told the Daily Echo that the May punishment “was way beyond what I thought it would and should have been”. He added, “I was deeply hurt that our club had been dragged into this situation in May, and part of me did believe he would have been either dismissed or banned.” He believes a ban for Eckert would be “a double whammy for the club”, adding that the manager “has openly spoken and apologised, but now it’s coming back and hitting you again with another sanction or ban, months later.”
Benali also took aim at Cambridge United manager Neil Harris, who called for a “huge ban” for Eckert last week. “When I saw his comments the other day, it’s like there’s a pile‑on in the football world,” Benali said, questioning why a manager with his own club responsibilities would add to the pressure. He noted that Harris sits on FA misconduct panels and should trust the body’s own decision‑making process.
If the FA imposes the maximum six‑month suspension, the Saints could start the 2026‑27 campaign without their head coach, compounding the earlier league sanctions. The timing of any ban remains uncertain, as the investigation was expected to be addressed during the international break but has yet to be concluded.
