Solanke saves Tottenham from defeat and the fight for last place

On Saturday evening, Tottenham secured a 1‑1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, on the sixth matchday of the Premier League, thanks to a final and decisive headed goal from Dominic Solanke scored in the 90 + 2ᵉ minute.

Dominant but fruitless first half

The Spurs imposed their game from the opening minutes, thanks to the complementarity of their three midfielders Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher. Wingers Mohammed Kudus and Savio also created overloads on the flanks. Dominic Solanke missed two clear chances, in the third minute and then in the fiftieth, while Kudus hit the woodwork in the twenty‑et‑une and Savio in the sixty‑nine.

Observers expected Tottenham to replicate the season’s usual pattern, dominating the first period without managing to score before conceding. Leny Yoro, however, was used in an unusual right‑back position during his time on the pitch.

Late assessment and escape from bottom place

Manchester United opened the scoring in the sixty‑third minute with a curled shot from Bryan Mbeumo, after an exchange on the left side between Luke Shaw and Matheus Cunha. Amad Diallo tried a long-range shot without success. The Red Devils then pressed, but Mbeumo narrowly missed a double in the eighty‑fifth minute.

Tottenham were reduced to ten men in the sixty‑nine‑th minute, Rodrigo Bentancur being sent off after a head‑to‑head with Luke Shaw, who could also have been punished. The numerical superiority allowed United to create their best chances, even though Mbeumo missed in the eighty‑fifth minute. Despite the pressure, the score remained unchanged until the end of regular time.

Dominic Solanke then equalised in the 90 + 2ᵉ minute, with a header from a Sandro Tonali cross. This goal marks his third Premier League goal for the 2026‑2027 season. Coach Roberto de Zerbi thus found a respite, the goal potentially changing the overall momentum of the Spurs’ season.

The point earned allowed the Spurs to leave the bottom spot of the Championship, moving them up to eighteenth place. Tottenham no longer occupies the lower end of the Premier League table.

This draw at Old Trafford, in the Trafford area, gives Tottenham a breath of fresh air before the upcoming challenges. The match, recorded on the sixth matchday of the Premier League, will remain memorable for the late comeback.
