Slot considers Premier League jobs, rejects national role
Arne Slot increasingly hints that he is considering a return to club football in England, with a possible Premier League assignment at the centre. He confirms that he turned down the role of head coach of the Netherlands national team in order to continue focusing on club level.
In an interview with the Algemeen Dagblad, Slot said that the rumours about a withdrawal from the process surrounding the head‑coach vacancy are inaccurate. “In the past weeks, and especially in the past days, several reports have appeared … That speculation is incorrect. We simply never entered that stage of the talks,” he said.
Slot emphasised that he wants to continue focusing on club football. “At this stage of my career I would rather see myself daily on the training pitch with my players, something that simply isn’t possible in the same way with a national team,” he explained.
Spurs link and Premier League chance
The name of Tottenham Hotspur is being mentioned more and more as a potential destination; the Spurs are currently bottom of the English league but are aiming for Champions League participation and even the title. It would be a “crazy job” to get the club in London back on track. Slot would say “yes” to Tottenham if the club approached him. After a disappointing second season at Liverpool, in which he won the Premier League directly in his first year, a move to Manchester United is ruled out. Slot was previously a serious candidate for the coaching position at Tottenham before the club chose Ange Postecoglou in 2023; now that there is a different leadership, he could still be tempted.
Style and tactical considerations
Analysts point to Slot’s preference for possession, aggressive pressing and high tempo, characteristics that match Roberto De Zerbi’s approach at Tottenham. Yet adjustments would be needed in positioning and inter‑player distances to make the system fit.
With the new signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, the squad has players who can distribute tasks from a controlling position. Dominik Szoboszlai excelled in the number‑10 role during Slot’s first season at Anfield, and at Tottenham a choice would have to be made between James Maddison, Xavi Simons and Dejan Kulusevski. Finding the right balance between creativity, movement around the penalty area and off‑ball work remains crucial.
