Míchel appointed Ajax coach after Girona Champions League stint

🇳🇱 2 June 2026

Míchel has been appointed as the new head coach of AFC Ajax. Jordi Cruijff confirmed the appointment in his role as Ajax's director of football.

Míchel previously guided Girona FC to their first-ever Champions League qualification. Girona were subsequently relegated under his management.

Susila Cruijff presented Míchel with an award for preserving Johan Cruijff's football philosophy. The prize recognized Míchel's commitment to the Cruijff principles.

Jordi Cruijff, brother of Johan Cruijff, oversaw the hiring process. He cited Míchel's alignment with the club's historic values as a key factor.

Ajax expect the new coach to embed the Cruijff philosophy across the squad. The club aims to restore domestic dominance and European competitiveness.

Míchel's first task will be to prepare Ajax for the upcoming Eredivisie campaign. His performance will be judged on how quickly he translates the philosophy into results.
