Sir Jim Ratcliffe fights to keep JJ Gabriel at Man Utd as Real looms
Manchester United’s 15‑year‑old forward JJ Gabriel has handed in a letter asking for his registration to be cancelled, signalling he wants to leave Old Trafford immediately, and co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is making a last‑ditch plea to persuade the British prodigy to stay.
Gabriel's prodigious record
The teenage forward is ranked among the most promising British talents after netting 26 goals in 29 games across the U18 Premier League and the FA Youth Cup last season. At 15, his scoring rate has drawn attention from clubs across Europe. United view him as a future first‑team cornerstone.
United's fast‑track plan derailed
Manchester United had placed Gabriel on a fast‑track scheme intended to promote him into the senior squad. The club planned to include him in the matchday roster for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup third‑round tie against Brighton at Old Trafford. That opportunity vanished after news emerged on Tuesday that he wanted to quit.
Two reasons behind the exit request
Sources cite Michael Carrick’s reluctance to give Gabriel more minutes during pre‑season and United’s decision not to offer him a senior debut as the key factors prompting his departure request. Gabriel featured for only eight minutes despite being part of four pre‑season squads, and he was omitted from the Champions League registration for the Sabah FK fixture.
Manchester United warned hiring Conte could repeat swift Chelsea collapse
He also travelled to Norway for a meeting with Rosenborg on 24 July but did not play, even though Carrick made eleven substitutions in that game. The lack of promised playing time has left him disillusioned.
Passport issue and rival suitors
Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which gives him different rights from a British one and makes him eligible to move to Spain. Real Madrid are reported to be leading the chase, with Chelsea and Xabi Alonso’s side also in contention. United fear they may be powerless to stop his exit once he turns 16 on 6 October.
Ratcliffe’s intervention and club response
Per The Athletic, United executives say Sir Jim Ratcliffe is aware of the matter and is doing everything in his power to intervene. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are also involved in attempts to persuade Gabriel to stay. United have stated they will not release his registration, which runs to the end of the season, and hope a resolution can be found.
United face a talent vacuum as JJ Gabriel seeks European exit
While the club continues talks over a new contract for captain Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel’s situation remains in limbo, leaving United’s plans to usher the teenager into the first team uncertain.
