Simeone says Man Utd's high press left Utd exposed in Atletico win
Diego Simeone’s assessment of Manchester United’s performance under Michael Carrick follows a 2-0 defeat at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday evening, a result that deepens United’s disappointing start to the season and intensifies pressure on the interim manager.
Early goal sets the tone
Pablo Barrios gave Atletico Madrid the lead after just one minute, capitalising on a swift opening move. The Spanish club, bolstered by the early strike, continued to test United’s defence throughout the first half.
Atletico’s second goal arrived in the 79th minute when Ademola Lookman finished a well‑crafted chance, sealing the victory for the visitors.
United’s challenges on the night
Manchester United saw defender Leny Yoro sent off in the 74th minute, leaving the Red Devils a man short as the match progressed. Despite the numerical disadvantage, United created several opportunities, including a notable chance for Bruno Fernandes before the dismissal.
Michael Carrick reflected on the defeat, noting the difficulty of the venue and the quality of the chances United produced, but lamented the failure to convert them into goals.
Atletico dominates Manchester United at the Metropolitano
“It is a tough enough place to come and to get the start we had obviously puts us in a more difficult situation,” Carrick wrote on the club’s official website. “We had four big chances… then the red card… it is mixed feelings.”
Simeone praised his own side’s execution, stating, “We were lucky to start the game on the front foot, with the first goal. We knew they’d press high, [United] do that well, but we beat that first press and got into important positions.”
He added that Atletico exploited the wings, a tactical nuance that troubled United: “We knew we could hurt them on the wings… we had more chances.”
