Simeone condemns Mourinho’s tirade after Atlético’s derby win

In the press room of the Wanda Metropolitano, shortly after the 2-1 victory of Atlético Madrid over Real Madrid, Diego Simeone was ready to respond to José Mourinho's angry comments about the refereeing. The Portuguese manager had fiercely complained about the red cards after the match, while Simeone emphasized the role‑model function of coaches.

Respect for referees central

Simeone said during the press conference that “as coaches we are under enormous pressure, but regardless of whether you are Mourinho, Flick, Pellegrini or myself, you must be careful with what you say”. He emphasized that respect for referees and fellow managers is crucial and that crossing that line is “unacceptable”.

The 56‑year‑old Atlético manager refused to comment on the specific red‑card decisions, and said: “I have no opinion on it. The referee already told me it was not a red card. Let’s leave it at that.”

Mourinho slams referee after 1-2 derby loss to Atlético

Mourinho had mainly criticised the red cards, but Simeone refrained from an extensive discussion about those moments.

Giuliano Simeone, son of the Argentine manager, also defended the refereeing and stated: “I have a lot of respect for the referees. Sometimes they are right, sometimes not, but they make decisions based on their observation.”
