Shelbourne's surge at Tolka Park cuts three‑point gap to leaders

Shelbourne secured a 3-0 victory over bottom‑placed Cork City at Tolka Park, moving the Dublin side to third place and narrowing the gap to league leaders Athlone Town to just three points, while the champions retain a game in hand.

The first half remained deadlocked at 0-0. Both sides struggled to create clear chances, leaving Shelbourne frustrated despite home advantage.

Cork City's defense held firm. The hosts could not break the stalemate before the hour mark.

The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute when Aoife Kelly met Meave Wollmer's cross, powering a downward header just inside the near post to give Shelbourne the lead. Her goal lifted the home crowd's spirits and shifted momentum in Shelbourne's favour.

Twelve minutes from time, substitute Brie Severns added a second, poking home the near‑post finish from a right‑hand corner. Her composure under pressure further extended Shelbourne's advantage.

New signing Bella Flocchini capped the win with a long‑range effort that curled inside the right‑hand post in the closing minutes. The strike sealed a comprehensive performance for the visitors.

Cork City, anchored at the bottom of the table, could not recover. Shelbourne's third‑place standing now leaves them three points behind leaders Athlone Town, who still possess a game in hand, tightening the title race as the season approaches its climax.
