Shearer warns Roberto De Zerbi that Spurs risk relegation despite Champions hopes

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has said he doubts Tottenham Hotspur will survive the 2026/27 Premier League season, warning manager Roberto De Zerbi that the club’s early form could see them finish bottom of the table.

Dire start fuels speculation

Shearer expressed disbelief at Spurs’ “embarrassing start” after five opening games without a win, leaving them at the foot of the league as the international break approaches. He noted that few would have predicted such a poor run given the club’s recent spending spree.

The club has invested over £300 million on summer signings, a figure that many believed would propel them into Champions League contention. Yet the same money has not prevented a slide that saw them near relegation last season.

Shearer’s warning and outlook

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: “We should be surprised by Spurs’ start to the season, because I don’t think anyone in football would have said after five games, Spurs are going to be winless and they’re bottom of the league, with the money they’ve spent, no one could foresee what’s happening to them.”

He added that the pressure on De Zerbi is “massively on” and that “all the bigger questions will start to be asked if they don’t start winning football games very, very soon.”

Despite the bleak assessment, Shearer believes the club can avoid the drop. He recalled how Tottenham recovered from a similar early‑season slump last year, climbing the table to secure European qualification.
