SFV withdraws support for FIFA boss Infantino
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has today decided to withdraw its support for the renewed candidacy of the Switzerland‑born FIFA boss Gianni Infantino. In June, the central board had supported the candidacy for the FIFA presidential election – now the stance has changed.
SFV president Peter Knäbel emphasized that the association expects the FIFA leadership to uphold the highest standards in transparency, accountability and institutional responsibility. He referred to a letter from Infantino, in which he for the first time offered talks with opponents about possible reforms.
Knäbel, formerly director of professional football at Hamburger SV and sports director at FC Schalke 04, called the letter an important signal, but criticised open questions regarding backgrounds, responsibilities and decision‑making processes. As long as these are not convincingly clarified, the SFV cannot continue to support the candidacy.
New assessment after criticism of Infantino
The central board's decision follows a comprehensive re‑evaluation of the developments of the past months. Infantino is under massive pressure because of the World Cup investor plans in the summer, and his leadership style, the 56‑year‑old president is sharply criticised by parts of the football world, contributes to the decision.
The FIFA presidential election will take place in March of next year. Infantino’s letter did not mention either a renunciation of a fourth term or a withdrawal from the candidacy.
