SFA clearance clears American consortium’s bid for Shrewsbury

An American consortium comprising Scott Davidson, Will Dotson, Craig Graham and former Liverpool, Tottenham and Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel has received clearance from the Scottish Football Association to hold interests in both Spartans FC and Shrewsbury Town, removing the final regulatory hurdle for the proposed takeover of the League Two side, who sit 14th after three wins from nine games.

Regulatory clearance granted

The Scottish FA confirmed that the dual‑interest approval removes any conflict arising from Davidson’s majority shareholding at Spartans FC, where Dotson and Graham also sit on the board. In a statement, Spartans said: “The Scottish FA has given approval to the dual interests arising from the acquisition of Shrewsbury Town FC by the consortium led by The Spartans FC lead shareholder Scott Davidson and the appointment of Scott, Will Dotson and Craig Graham as directors of both The Spartans FC and Shrewsbury Town FC.” The club added that the ruling “completes the majority of the regulatory aspects of the acquisition”. The approval removes the final regulatory hurdle for the bid, allowing the consortium to progress to the next stage of the acquisition.

Consortium composition and financial vetting

The group has already satisfied the due‑diligence and financial examinations imposed by the English Football League and Regulator. Brad Friedel, who played for Liverpool, Tottenham and Blackburn, brings a footballing pedigree to the venture, while the three business partners contribute experience from their roles at Spartans FC. The group’s financial robustness was confirmed by Regulator, which examined the consortium’s funding sources and guarantees.

Takeover background and timeline

Shrewsbury chairman Roland Wycherley put the club up for sale in 2024 after three decades at the helm. A potential American buyer withdrew in March 2025 and a second bid collapsed six months later, leaving the club without a suitor until the current consortium entered negotiations six months ago. The six‑month negotiation period reflects the consortium’s sustained interest despite earlier failed attempts. The parties hope to seal the deal before Christmas.

Wycherley, now 85, warned that “time and patience” will be essential once the new owners assume control, drawing on his own 30‑year experience of running the club. Wycherley’s statement underscores the club’s need for stability during the transition. The completion of the sale will bring an end to his three‑decade tenure as owner.

If the acquisition proceeds, Shrewsbury Town – currently 14th in League Two with three victories from nine fixtures – could see new investment and strategic direction under the American‑led board, while Spartans FC will retain its Scottish League 2 status under the same directors. Maintaining dual ownership of Spartans FC and Shrewsbury Town could enable shared resources and strategic alignment across the two clubs.
