Sevilla surprise: Luis Garcia Plaza brings Fofana on loan from Milan

Luis Garcia Plaza, coach of Sevilla, announced today in the Spanish La Liga the loan arrival of Youssouf Fofana from Milan, a transfer described as “a gift fallen from the sky” and considered one of the surprises of the last day of the 2026 summer window.

The interrupted journey to Lyon

Having been left out of Milan’s technical project and the new coach Rubén Amorim, Fofana had accepted a transfer to Lyon. However, registration problems cancelled the deal, leaving him without a club by the end of the window.

The French midfielder has returned to Spain, where La Liga hosts him on loan from the red‑and‑black club. The player, who now plays in La Liga, was immediately added to the Spanish coach’s squad.

Taking very little time to earn a starting shirt, Fofana has become an indispensable player for Sevilla. Coach Plaza described him as a “gift” that arrived at the right moment.

Immediate impact in Spain

His impact was immediate. The midfielder displayed his quality in a decisive match against Barcelona.

With only four appearances, Fofana has already scored against Barcelona, demonstrating his ability to influence games. This performance confirmed the Spanish coach’s expectations.

Plaza explained: “The salary is mostly paid by Milan and it fell from the sky for us. We offered everything that was left of our wage ceiling.” The coach added that “FOFANA was a gift”.

Fofana, bought by Milan in the summer of 2024 for €20 million, is under contract until June 2028. The move to Sevilla was carried out as a straight loan, without a purchase option, after amassing 88 matches and three goals in his career.
