Serginho says Amorim has grasped Milan’s DNA, not just winning
Ruben Amorim has yet to lead AC Milan in an official match, but the Brazilian Ídolo Serginho already praises his grasp of the club’s DNA, noting that winning is mandatory yet the style of play matters. In two pre‑season friendlies Amorim secured a 2‑2 draw with Celtic and a 1‑1 stalemate against Inter Milan.
Serginho, one of the greatest left‑backs in Milan’s history, is an Ídolo of the supporters and remains closely linked to the club through the Fondazione Milan and the Milan Legends group. He granted an interview to La Stampa, where he discussed Amorim’s early impact.
The former player believes Amorim demonstrates, from his first steps in charge, that Milan’s identity goes beyond simply winning; the way victories are built is part of the institution’s DNA. He stresses that the Rossoneri are accustomed to being protagonists, offering offensive football that excites the fans.
“Ele (Amorim) já está mostrando que entendeu o DNA deste clube. No Milan, não basta apenas jogar e não basta apenas ganhar. Aqui não basta ganhar. É preciso se esforçar para praticar um futebol atraente, porque é isso que todo mundo espera,” Serginho told La Stampa.
Ruben Amorim could reunite with two former players at Milan in January
Amorim’s record in the two friendlies includes a 2‑2 draw against Celtic and a 1‑1 draw versus Inter Milan. This Saturday (8) the Rossoneri will face Chelsea at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, in another preparatory match.
Serginho lived through one of Milan’s most successful recent periods, winning the Champions League twice and the Serie A title, and he watched the team thrive under coaches such as Carlo Ancelotti.
Before arriving in Italy, Amorim built his reputation at Sporting, where he created an organized, intense, and offensive side. He now faces the challenge of returning Milan to the forefront of Italian and European football.
The club will compete in the Europa League in the 2026/27 season, and Serginho expects a positive shift after a season below expectations. He highlights the need to aim for Champions League qualification while restoring Milan’s protagonism at home and abroad.
Ahead of the official Serie A debut against Torino on 23 October, Amorim has two further tests: pre‑season friendlies against Chelsea and Manchester United. The clash with Chelsea will be special, marking a reunion with the English side he coached before taking the Milan job.
