Costly signing fails to deliver

Randall arrived at the Toughsheet Stadium after a prolific 2023/24 season with Peterborough United, where he recorded ten goals and seven assists. Bolton paid a seven‑figure fee of £1.3 million for the attacking midfielder, hoping his creativity would aid their Championship return. He spent the latter half of last season on loan at Blackpool, reuniting with former Bolton boss Ian Evatt, but failed to make a lasting impact.

Why Bolton took a chance

The club’s promotion campaign left the squad thin in forward areas, and early points against QPR highlighted a need for additional attacking options. Despite the injury to Ruben Rodrigues, manager Steven Schumacher preferred the teenage Toby Ritchie on the bench over Randall for the QPR match. The decision reflects the belief that Randall has not yet proved his worth under the current management.

Randall has contributed only five goal involvements in 39 appearances for Bolton, the majority of which have come from the bench. He has not featured since the January 4 defeat, and his loan spell at Blackpool saw limited minutes after an early injury. These factors have left him surplus to requirements as the transfer window closes.

“I don’t think so, not at this stage,” Steven Schumacher told the Bolton News when asked about interest in Randall, adding that the player is still training with the squad. He noted that other players will see reduced game time if Randall remains, implying a need for a departure.

Supporters have criticised the signing, labeling it one of the club’s worst transfers and questioning the wages he commands. With no suitor emerging, Bolton may need to off‑load his contract to free up funds, while Randall will be looking for a fresh start elsewhere. The unresolved situation adds pressure to the club’s transfer log and could shape the road ahead for both parties.
