Second-division kick-off: Bochum face Hertha in season opener
The countdown to the new 2. Bundesliga season on Fussballdaten.de has ended, with VfL Bochum hosting Hertha BSC in the opening match of the 2026/2027 campaign in the live blog.
A team photo of VfL Bochum in the new special edition Bundesliga – still called “the bible” of German football by many fans after years – looks modestly framed by the coaching staff. The accompanying motto reads: “You carry it within you.”
“All I can speak for is myself: I want to play in the Bundesliga again,” said Bochum head coach Uwe Rösler (57) in a major interview (Monday edition) ahead of the season start. “If I said I didn’t want to go up with Hertha, I’d be lying.”
Rösler’s side will need more than words to compete in the promotion race, with the question remaining whether their ambition is enough.
The opening goal of the season arrived in the 40th minute: a 1-0 lead for Hertha BSC, scored by Sebastian Grönning after a pinpoint through-ball from Soufian Gouram.
Twelve minutes earlier, Gouram had tested the Bochum defence with a curling effort from inside the penalty area, only for the ball to sail narrowly over the crossbar.
The first real chance fell to Bochum in the 30th minute when Berkan Taz delivered a left-wing cross to the head of striker Philipp Hofmann, but Hofmann’s header lacked power and Hertha goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck gathered safely.
Timo Horn made a crucial interception from a free-kick taken deep in Hertha’s half.
The game was briefly halted at the 24th minute when a Hertha banner obstructed an emergency exit in the away sector, prompting safety checks. VfL captain Timo Horn engaged in discussions with Berlin’s players over the issue.
After ten minutes of play, no shots on target had been recorded, though Hertha had recorded a 79% pass-completion rate and held 60% of the ball.
Before kick-off, Rösler named five new arrivals in his starting lineup for Bochum.
“What I need is passion – the team needs it too,” Rösler told JOYN ahead of the match. “Nobody wants another season of second-division football week after week. It’s unique to the 2. Bundesliga, but England’s Championship sits at the same level.”
